This Privacy Policy explains how Mecipe (“Mecipe”, “we”, “us”, “our”) — a mobile app operated by an independent developer based in the Netherlands — collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use the Mecipe app and related services (the “Service”).
We are the data controller for your personal data. You can reach us at support@mecipe.app.
1. The short version
- Mecipe saves recipes from social media and turns them into clean, structured recipes using AI.
- We collect only what we need to run the Service: your account, the recipes and content you save, your subscription status, and limited diagnostic and usage data.
- We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for cross-app advertising or tracking.
- We use a small set of trusted providers (Apple, Supabase, RevenueCat, Anthropic, Resend, and PostHog) to operate the Service.
- You can access, correct, export, or delete your data at any time, including by deleting your account in the app.
2. Data we collect
2.1 Information you provide
- Account information. When you sign in with Apple, Apple shares your name and an email address (which may be a private Apple relay address that forwards to you). We store this to create and secure your account.
- Recipe content. The social-media links (URLs) you submit, the recipes we extract and translate from them, and anything you add or change — edits, notes, collections, favourites, and any ratings or reviews you write.
- Communications. The content of emails or messages you send us for support.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Subscription & purchase data. Your Mecipe Pro status, entitlements, free-trial status, and receipt-validation data. Payments are processed by Apple — we never receive or store your card details.
- Usage & analytics data. The screens you view, features you use, your app version, and coarse device/OS information, so we can understand and improve the Service. We use a privacy-friendly analytics setup (see §5); it is not linked to your account and your IP address is discarded. You can object at any time by email (see §8).
- Diagnostic & technical data. IP address, device type, operating system, language, timestamps, and server logs, used for security, abuse prevention, and reliability.
2.3 Information from third parties
- Sign in with Apple. As above, limited profile data from Apple.
- Public social-media content. When you submit a link, we retrieve the publicly available content at that link in order to extract the recipe at your request.
3. How and why we use your data (legal bases)
Under the GDPR we rely on the following lawful bases:
| Purpose | Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6) |
|---|---|
| Create and manage your account; provide recipe import, AI extraction, translation, and sync | Performance of a contract — Art. 6(1)(b) |
| Process subscriptions, free trials, restores, and offer codes | Performance of a contract — Art. 6(1)(b) |
| Keep the Service secure, prevent abuse and fraud, and ensure reliability (basic logs) | Legitimate interests — Art. 6(1)(f) |
| Product analytics to understand and improve the app | Legitimate interests — Art. 6(1)(f) (privacy-friendly config; not linked to your account; you can object by email) |
| Send trial-reminder and service emails | Contract / legitimate interests; optional marketing only with consent |
| Keep purchase and tax records; respond to lawful requests | Legal obligation — Art. 6(1)(c) |
4. AI processing of recipe content
To convert a saved post into a clean recipe, we send the relevant content (the source link and the text/caption retrieved from it) to our AI provider, Anthropic, which returns a structured, translated recipe. This processing happens only when you ask us to import or convert a recipe. We do not use your personal account data to train AI models, and our AI provider processes the content under a data-processing agreement and does not use it to train its models on our instruction. AI output can be inaccurate — see our Terms of Use for the accuracy and food-safety disclaimers.
6. International data transfers
Your account and recipe data are stored in the European Union (our database, Supabase, is hosted in Frankfurt, and our analytics, PostHog, uses EU Cloud). Some other providers we rely on are located outside the European Economic Area (EEA), including in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the EEA, we rely on an appropriate safeguard — an EU adequacy decision (including the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified) or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. You can ask us for more detail using the contact details below.
7. How long we keep your data
- Account & recipe content: for as long as your account is active.
- After account deletion: we delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep it longer (below) or in routine backups, which are overwritten on a rolling basis.
- Ratings & reviews: to preserve aggregate recipe ratings for other users, any reviews you wrote are anonymised rather than deleted when you delete your account.
- Purchase & tax records: retained for the period required by Dutch tax law (currently 7 years).
- Logs & diagnostics: kept for a short period (typically up to 90 days) then deleted or aggregated.
8. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to: access your data; rectify inaccurate data; request erasure; restrict processing; object to processing based on our legitimate interests (including our usage analytics); data portability (receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format); and withdraw any consent you have given, without affecting prior lawful processing.
To exercise any right — including objecting to our usage analytics — email support@mecipe.app. We respond within one month. Because our analytics is not linked to your account and your IP address is discarded, we may be unable to single out the data relating to you (we’ll tell you if that’s the case); you can also stop all analytics collection on your device by uninstalling the app. If you believe we’ve mishandled your data, you may lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl), or your local EEA supervisory authority.
8.1 California residents
If you live in California, you have rights to know, access, delete, and correct your personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising them. We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA. To exercise your rights, contact us at the address below.
9. How we protect your data
We use encryption in transit (TLS), store your sign-in session in the device’s secure Keychain, restrict database access to server-side functions, and apply access controls and least-privilege practices. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data using appropriate technical and organisational measures.
10. Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app: Settings → Delete Account. This removes your account and personal data subject to the retention rules in §7 (notably anonymised reviews and legally required purchase records). Deleting the app from your device does not by itself delete your account — use the in-app option.
11. Children
Mecipe is not directed to children. You must be at least 16 years old (the age of digital consent in the Netherlands) to use the Service. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Push and local notifications
Mecipe schedules local notifications (such as trial reminders) on your device only if you grant notification permission. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We’ll post the new version on this page, update the “Last updated” date, and, for material changes, notify you in the app.
